Ascona was the base for the German national team, at the grand and beautiful Lake Maggiore. On, rather than alongside, the lake was a SoccerGround.
Yes, on the lake itself. The Tessin Tourist Office (Ticino Tourismo) had the fantastic idea to erect a SoccerGround on a floating pontoon on Lake Maggiore, right next to the European Championships lake stage.
As luck would have it, the water in Lake Maggiore rose to an unusually high level during the Championships, making it difficult to see the action from the lakeside promenade. The SoccerGround team knew just what to do: on the eve of the European Championships opening ceremony, the perimeter boards of the pitch were replaced with specially made acrylic glass ….
